Sodium abundances in nearby disk stars ⋆

چکیده
We present sodium abundances for a sample of nearby stars. All results have been derived from NLTE statistical equilibrium calculations. The influence of collisional interactions with electrons and hydrogen atoms is evaluated by comparison of the solar spectrum with very precise fits to the Na I line cores. The NLTE effects are more pronounced in metal-poor stars since the statistical equilibrium is dominated by collisions of which at least the electronic component is substantially reduced. The resulting influence on the determination of sodium abundances is in a direction opposite to that found previously for Mg and Al. The NLTE corrections are about −0.1 in thick-disk stars with [Fe/H] ∼ −0.6. Our [Na/Fe] abundance ratios are about solar for thick-and thin-disk stars. The increase in [Na/Fe] as a function of [Fe/H] for metal-rich stars found by Edvardsson et al. (1993) is confirmed. Our results suggest that sodium yields increase with the metallicity, and quite large amounts of sodium may be produced by AGB stars. We find that [Na/Fe] ratios, together with either [Mg/Fe] ratio, kinematic data or stellar evolutionary ages, make possible the individual discrimination between thin-and thick-disk membership.

The Origins and Evolutionary Status of B Stars Found Far From the Galactic Plane I: Composition and Spectral Features
The existence of faint blue stars far above the galactic plane, which have spectra that are similar to nearby Population I B stars, present several interesting questions. Among them are: Can a Population I B star travel from the disk to a position many kiloparsecs above the plane in a relatively short main sequence lifetime? Is it possible that single massive star formation is occurring far fro...
متن کاملJ an 2 00 7 Gas Absorption Detected from the Edge - on Debris Disk Surrounding HD 32297
Near-infrared and optical imaging of HD32297 indicate that it has an edgeon debris disk, similar to β Pic. I present high resolution optical spectra of the Na I doublet toward HD32297 and stars in close angular proximity. A circumstellar absorption component is clearly observed toward HD32297 at the stellar radial velocity, which is not observed toward any of its neighbors, including the neares...
متن کاملThe rise and fall of the NaMgAl stars
We have made new abundance determinations for a sample of NaMgAl stars. These stars, which are a subgroup of the nearby metal-rich field F and G disk dwarfs, were first identified by Edvardsson et al. (1993) on the basis of their apparent enrichment in Na, Mg and Al relative to other elements. The discovery of a planetary companion to the nearby solar type star 51 Peg (Mayor & Queloz 1995) comb...
متن کاملImplications for galactic evolution and planet searches around very young stars
In this paper we present a study of chemical abundances in six star-forming regions. Stellar parameters and metallicities are derived using high-resolution, high S/N spectra of weak-line T-Tauri stars in each region. The results show that nearby starforming regions have a very small abundance dispersion (only 0.033 dex in [Fe/H]). The average metallicity found is slightly below that of the Sun,...
متن کاملInteraction of Supernova Ejecta with Nearby Protoplanetary Disks
The early Solar System contained short-lived radionuclides such as Fe (t1/2 = 1.5 Myr) whose most likely source was a nearby supernova. Previous models of Solar System formation considered a supernova shock that triggered the collapse of the Sun’s nascent molecular cloud. We advocate an alternative hypothesis, that the Solar System’s protoplanetary disk had already formed when a very close (< 1...
